Welcome Statement from our Headteacher - Mrs Chris James

Dorothy Barley is a thriving community Infant school in Barking and Dagenham. The school has a large playground. Other space outside includes a very generous outdoor learning area for the exclusive use of our 3 to 5 year olds, a small planted quad area and a field which we share and use alternately with the Junior School.

We admit children from Nursery through to Year 2. Children can start in the term after their 3rd birthday. Children usually attend either a morning or an afternoon session for 15 hours per week. At Dorothy Barley we are committed to supporting working parents and offer full-time (30 hours) places for qualifying families. Please also see our details of our Breakfast and After School clubs in the dedicated area on this website.

We are always pleased to welcome visitors so please make an appointment at the school’s main office should you wish to come and see us in action.

Learning at Dorothy Barley Infant School

At Dorothy Barley Infant School we believe in providing a safe and stimulating environment which enables every child to achieve their best through varied learning experiences so that they grow to be confident, curious, happy, healthy members of the community. We believe the best way to achieve this is through partnership between teachers, parents, carers and children.

We are ambitious for all of our children and we want them to grow up to lead successful and fulfilling lives as proud members of the Barking and Dagenham community. In order to achieve this aim we work in partnership with families so that their children build confidence and resilience. Teachers track individual pupil progress and plan learning carefully to ensure that each child is able to achieve their best in all areas of EYFS and Key Stage One learning.

It is important to us that our pupils learn about their rights and responsibilities and children are rewarded for being kind and generous to others. The children are taught to treat each other and other members of the community with respect. The school regularly invites some of our older neighbours to lunch and to enjoy other events and performances. In 2018 our school achieved a Unicef Rights Respecting Schools Silver Award.

The school is very lucky to be near to good transport links and we love using these to take children on exciting trips such as visiting the Essex sea-side by train, visiting the forest by bus or taking the tube into London to make the most of the wonderful sights and museums.

Please contact the school office on 0208 270 4655 and speak to Susan and Donna with any queries that you may have and they will be happy to assist you.
Disabled Access: The school is all on one level, and there is a ramp to aid access to the school office.
Visitors and parking: Please come to the gate in Davington Rd for access to the school. Generally parking in the area around Davington Road is possible. The school car park is shared with another school and is very limited in spaces; if you are visiting the school and you think you will need to access the car park then please call the school office for assistence.
