At Dorothy Barley Infant School, we teach mathematics as the study of relationships in number, measure, space and statistics and their application to solving problems in a variety of situations.

This provides children with a way of viewing and making sense of the world in which they live. Building on their own experience, it encourages thinking and reasoning skills, embraces natural curiosity and develops the confidence to tackle problems.

Mathematics in Key Stage 1 is taught in either class or streamed ability groups, five times a week. 

Lessons are structured with a clear introduction, main activity and a plenary and are planned in accordance with the main areas set out by the 2014 National Curriculum.

Where possible, cross-curricular opportunities are used, which provide opportunities to apply, extend and promote the use of mathematics skills and knowledge to other areas of the curriculum

Planning is differentiated to meet the needs of all children in the class, and teachers use the Abacus Maths scheme, Maths Hubb and the White Rose maths scheme for planning and resources.

All children have access to the Abacus children’s website, where they can practise their mathematics skills online and complete activities set by their teacher.

Mathematics’ homework is set on Friday and should be completed and returned to class on Monday.
