At Dorothy Barley Infant School we aim to give all our children an understanding of the world around them. We teach alongside the PlanBee Science scheme of work. This scheme is based on the key learning statements of the national curriculum as well as exposing the children to real life scientific experiences. This allows us to have a greater emphasis on adventurous scientific vocabulary and encourages the children to be conscientious learners. Topics, such as Plants, are taught in Year One and studied again in greater depth in Year Two. This model allows children to build upon their prior knowledge and increases their enthusiasm for the topics. Also the children’s Science books follow them through the key stage so clear progress can be seen and to ensure they are secure in their subject knowledge. Scientific enquiry skills are embedded in each topic and child led experiments encourage the children to ask and find answers to questions. Pre teaching sessions and hands on examples ensure that all children can access the Science curriculum. We make cross-curricular links throughout the year with a range of subjects including PE and PSHE during Healthy Schools Week. We are proud to have run successful Science Weeks in past years with children and parents involved with exciting activities. Overall this helps to promote the profile of Science in our school and raise the children’s views of science in the wider world.
